Anatomy & Physiology

OBJECTIVE

Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology is essential when working to harmonize and understand the body. This course forms the foundation for study in beauty, massage, or holistic therapy and is an integral part of some of the courses or a pre-entry requirement.

PRE-REQUISITE

No prior experience is required; Certificate in Anatomy and Physiology is open to any candidate.

Module 1: Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology
Definitions: anatomy vs physiology
Levels of organisation (cell, tissue, organ, system)
Terminology (directional terms, planes, body regions)

Module 2: The Cell and Tissue Structure
Cell structure and functions
Cell transport and division
Types of tissues and their roles

Module 3: The Skeletal System
Bone structure and types
Major bones of the body
Joints and movement
Functions of the skeletal system

Module 4: The Muscular System
Types of muscle tissue
Major muscle groups
Muscle contraction and movement
Introduction to muscle terminology used in massage

Module 5: The Circulatory System
Heart structure and function
Blood vessels: arteries, veins, capillaries
Blood composition
Functions of the circulatory system

Module 6: The Lymphatic System
Lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes
Role in immunity
Relationship to fluid balance and massage

Module 7: The Respiratory System
Structure of lungs and airways
Breathing mechanism
Gas exchange
Relationship with oxygen delivery and relaxation

Module 8: The Nervous System
Central and peripheral nervous systems
Neurons and nerve impulses
Reflex actions
Autonomic nervous system (sympathetic/parasympathetic)

Module 9: The Endocrine System
Major endocrine glands
Hormones and their functions
Relationship between nervous and endocrine systems

Module 10: The Digestive System
Major organs and their functions
Process of digestion and absorption
Accessory organs (liver, pancreas)

Module 11: The Urinary System
Kidneys and their role in filtration
Structure of urinary tract
Fluid and electrolyte balance

Module 12: The Integumentary System (Skin)
Structure and functions of skin
Skin appendages (hair, nails, glands)
Importance in massage therapy

Module 13: The Reproductive System (Overview)
Male and female reproductive structures
Basic functions (non-therapeutic focus)

Theoretical Examination: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) exam

GRADING OF THE QUALIFICATION

 

The overall qualification is graded:

Pass – 60% – 74%

Merit – 75% – 89%

Distinction – 90%-100%

The collective mark is formed by multiple-choice questions and assignments.
